The Fuzzy Details
Welcome to Fuzzy Logic. My name is Lee Ann Balazuc. I learned to knit and design a bit in college, but those were the eighties, the decade of stunningly gorgeous potato sacks. This trend made me hate what I knitted, but I wasn't very logical back then, so I stopped knitting. Then, many years later, I moved to Montréal, where geekdom and logic kicked in. Note to self: Canada is COLD. Response to self: But I don't want to knit another stunningly gorgeous potato sack. The logical solution? Go back to knitting and really learn design. I'm still working on the second part. I write for a living, I love a dyed-in-the-wool geek, and he offered me a custom-designed blogging program, so...Fuzzy Logic says, let's talk incessantly blog about learning to make stuff that fits. Note: there will be an occasional appearance of scarves. This is Canada, people.
I am married to said wonderful geek, and since he values his privacy, he prefers that I not use his name in my posts. So, for posting purposes, I will call him Spiff. If you have ever read Calvin and Hobbes, you know Spaceman Spiff, and you know he wields one mean blaster, usually set on medium well (although he prefers his steak frites bleu. That's very rare, to you American types). The kid? Twinkletoes. She doesn't care about her privacy but we do.
Why the name Fuzzy Logic? Knitting is a very logical, mathematically oriented process (it's true!) but, as with many other "systems," a certain level of uncertainty (thank you, Yogi Berra) is required. In the real Fuzzy Logic system, the "if-then" syntax and imprecise terms are used to describe what must happen in a given process. And for knitting, while math and measurement are essential, sometimes you just have to eyeball it and decide "more ease here," "less ease there," or "frog the whole f-ing thing." Seattle Robotics has a very nice tutorial on the real Fuzzy Logic system, for those of you who love this kind of stuff. And how can you not love the idea of defuzzification? Excuse me while I pour myself another cup of defuzzifier....
I love to hear from people. But I don't love spam, so we've instigated the filtering device, also known as making sure you're human. You can also e-mail me at leeann DOT balazuc AT gmail.com. Please make the logical substitutions. Bienvenue!
